How Claude usage limits work
Claude plans have a rolling 5-hour session limit and a separate weekly limit, on top of the occasional global/partial resets tracked on this site. Everything below is sourced directly to Anthropic's own support pages, docs, and posts — see the "Sources" line at the end of each section.
The 5-hour session limit
Every Claude plan has a usage limit that resets on a rolling five-hour window. What differs is the size of that window's allowance — paid plans get a multiple of what Pro gets.
| Plan | 5-hour allowance |
|---|---|
| Free | Session-based limit; the exact number varies with demand |
| Pro | Baseline allowance |
| Max 5x | 5x Pro's per-session allowance |
| Max 20x | 20x Pro's per-session allowance |
| Team Standard seat | 1.25x Pro's per-session allowance |
| Team Premium seat | 6.25x Pro's per-session allowance |
| Usage-based Enterprise (current model) | No plan- or seat-level usage limits |
| Legacy seat-based Enterprise (Standard/Premium seats) | Still has usage limits |

Pro's usage limit is session-based and resets every five hours.

-
Max uses the same five-hour session reset as Pro, sized up by the 5x/20x multiplier.

-
Team usage limits are enforced per member, not pooled across the whole team.

-
Usage-based Enterprise plans, including the single-seat option, have no plan- or seat-level usage limits at all. Only the older seat-based Enterprise plans (Standard/Premium seats) still carry them.

Anthropic's own pricing FAQ describes every plan's limits as resetting on a rolling five-hour session window, with paid plans adding a weekly limit on top.

Free's usage limit is also session-based, resetting every five hours, though the exact number of messages varies with demand.

Pro gives at least 5x more usage per five-hour session than Free.

Anthropic's consumer documentation (Pro, Max, Team) doesn't say when the five-hour window starts. The only official statement of a start time is in the Claude for Government docs, which say the window begins at your first message and reset times round to the top of the hour — and that page is explicitly scoped to the government product, not to Pro/Max/Team.

The weekly limit
Pro, Max and Team also have a weekly usage limit on top of the five-hour one. It resets at a fixed time assigned to your account, not on a rolling clock that starts when you first use Claude.
-
Pro's weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account, and that reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription began.

-
Max uses the same fixed weekly reset as Pro.

-
Team Standard and Premium seats also reset their weekly limits at a fixed time assigned to the account.

Anthropic reserves the right to add other caps beyond these two — for example weekly or monthly caps, or model- and feature-specific limits — at its own discretion.

Anthropic hasn't published which weekday or hour any given account's weekly reset falls on; the plan pages only say your next reset time is shown in Settings → Usage.

In Claude Code, a weekly-limit message names the exact day and time it resets — Anthropic's own example reads “You've hit your weekly limit · resets Mon 12:00am.”

-
Max plans (and Team Premium seats) can use up to 50% of their weekly usage limit on Fable models; on Pro and Team Standard seats, Fable draws from usage credits instead.

No official Free-plan weekly limit has been found in Anthropic's documentation — only the Free plan's five-hour session limit is described.

Do Claude Code and claude.ai chat share one limit?
Yes — there's a single pool per account, not a separate allowance per app.
-
All Claude product surfaces — claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop — count toward the same usage limit.

-
Pro and Max usage limits are shared specifically across Claude chat and Claude Code — all activity in both tools counts against the same limit.

For Team and Enterprise seats, the allowance is also shared with Claude chat and Cowork.

In Claude Code, usage counts against the session and weekly allowances at the same time — they're tracked together, not as separate pools you use up independently.

Where to see your usage
-
On claude.ai, Settings → Usage shows progress bars for both the five-hour session limit and the weekly limit, plus the time left in the current session and the next weekly reset time.

-
In Claude Code, running /usage shows your plan's usage bars, activity stats and each window's reset time (/cost and /stats are aliases for the same screen).
-
The Claude Code status line can show a rolling five_hour window and a weekly seven_day window, each with its own reset timestamp — visible to Pro and Max subscribers, or to users behind a gateway with a spend limit.

-
Claude Code Desktop shows a usage ring next to the model picker for your current plan usage.
-
One conflict worth flagging: an older Help Center article (2026-08-19) told Pro/Max users to monitor usage with /status. Claude Code's current docs (2026-09-22) instead put plan usage limits under /usage, and describe /status as showing version, model, account and connectivity info only — not usage.

What uses your limit faster

Longer conversations that trigger automatic context management use more of your usage limit.

Tools and connectors are token-intensive, so managing them helps both your context window and your usage limit.

Content reused from a project is cached and counts less against your limits.

Fable models draw from your plan's regular weekly usage limit and use it up faster than other Claude models.

There's no fixed message count — how much you can do depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the model you choose, and the features you use.

What to do once you hit a limit
-
Three official options: wait for it to reset, upgrade your plan, or purchase usage credits.

-
Usage credits (formerly called “extra usage”) bill at standard API rates once enabled in Settings → Usage, with a daily redemption cap of $2000.

-
Discounted usage bundles — pre-purchased usage credits at up to 30% off standard rates — are available on Pro, Max and Team.
-
In Claude Code, switching to a different model family only helps if you hit a model-specific limit — the session and weekly limits are shared across all models, so switching models doesn't restore access to those.

Claude Code can also wait inside an open session and auto-continue an interrupted task shortly after the reset happens.

If your account has an unused limit reset available, you can use it to set either the five-hour or weekly limit back to full — see this site's banked-reset page for what's known about how that works.

Frequently asked questions
Is a global reset the same as my personal usage limit resetting?
No. Your 5-hour and weekly windows roll on their own account-level schedule regardless of anything on this page. The resets tracked here are separate, occasional events Anthropic announces for some or all users at once.
What's the difference between the 5-hour limit and the weekly limit?
The 5-hour limit is a rolling session window every plan has, sized differently per plan (Max and Team seats get a multiple of Pro's allowance). The weekly limit is a separate cap on Pro, Max and Team that resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, not on a 7-day timer from when you started. See the sections above for the exact multiples and sources.
When does my 5-hour session window start?
Anthropic's consumer documentation (Pro, Max, Team) doesn't say. The only official statement of a start time is in the Claude for Government docs, which say the window starts at your first message and rounds reset times to the top of the hour — and that page is explicitly scoped to the government product.
When does my weekly limit reset?
At a fixed time each week assigned to your account — it doesn't move based on when you start using Claude. Anthropic hasn't published which weekday or hour that is for any given account; check Settings → Usage for your own.
Do Claude Code and claude.ai chat share the same usage limit?
Yes. Anthropic's support pages say all activity across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop draws from the same usage pool for Pro and Max — there's no separate allowance per surface.
What makes me use up my limit faster?
Anthropic's own list: message length, attachment size, conversation length, tool usage, model choice, and effort level. Long conversations that trigger automatic context management, and token-heavy tools or connectors, also use more of the limit; cached project content counts less when it's reused.
Where do I check my usage in Claude Code?
Run /usage — it shows your plan's usage bars and each window's reset time. An older Help Center article pointed Pro/Max users to a different command for this; the current Claude Code docs describe /usage as the one that shows plan limits.
